Default Weld in Roll Bar and gas tank

Well, I have read until my eyes hurt and still haven't found what I was looking for. Do I need to drop the fuel tank to weld in the back plates for my roll bar? From what I have found, I don't really want to weld them to the wheel wells. Am I right in this?
Also, any other requirements I should know about before I do this? I know about the 2" from the helmet and the door bar passing between my elbow and shoulder. Anything else I really need to worry about?
Thanks

I didnt drop mine but I have a steel tank (98), I would probably drop it with a plastic tank. There are also plastic vapor lines under where you need to weld (even on the metal tanks) so even if you dont burn through the tank you can still melt a bunch of stuff.. Its not that hard to drop a plastic tank..
