Default Welders inside

I have been told by a few good welders that are more into MIG welding and they are all pretty sure you can MIG chromolly WITH the right wire.

Anyone know anything on this?

I have been to busy latley to have the chance to call around.

Cage goes in a week from Saturday. Can't wait!

It will crack!

NHRA will not accept ANY mig welded cromoly... The way Mig welding heats the metal is just all wrong for the stuff.

Dont mess with your safety, pay a pro to tig weld it, or get a mild steel cage if your gonna weld it yourself.

Illegal on any drag car.

Stick with Moly & Tig welding.

MIG welding can be done right on CM but it's tricky and rather than take a chance with weld quality ALL sanctioning bodies find it's way easier to just say don't. It's safer for everybody that way.

It is possible to mig weld chromoly. If you ever find the need for it, use something like er70s-2 wire for it.

Per the nhra and ihra rule book, it says chromoly must be tig welded. Mild steel can use the mig or tig process per the rules.

When tigging chromoly, use either er80s-d2, or er70s-2. Do NOT use chromoly filler.

I have seen several people successfully weld CM. My buddy does welding professionally, I've seen him MIG CM, and Ive seen him get extremely frustrated when the last of several welds makes it crack... Turning his project into a pile of scrap.

But your right, with enough skill and patience, Cromoly can be MIG welded... But NHRA will not allow it, so for the most of us, thats what needs to be said.

Oh, and thanks for the wire specs, Im sure someone will find it useful.
