a good ls goes for a grand or more. if you want cheaper, get a truck block.

A decent complete LS1 goes for ~$1500-2k depending on mileage and condition. As stated above, your best bet is a truck engine. You can get a 5.3L LM7 or a 6.0L LQ4 for under a grand and they are basically the same block as an LS1, just made of iron instead of aluminum. A stroked 5.3 will easily match an LS1, and if you poke around here there are some crazy 6.0 builds.

The 5.3's are in most '99+ 1/2 ton trucks and '00+ tahoes, burbs, yukons. 6.0s came in 3/4 tons. Check your local junkyards.
