question about the $225 "new wheels" fee
I'm going to go to the DMV tomorrow to register my 2 cars. i have heard there is some fee for $225 for bringing in an out of state car. my question is, my trans am was purchased used by me in FL in 2004. I owned it there from 2004-2005 before moving to arizona. I remember the license plate no. even though i don't physically have the plate, but plan on getting a custom plate anyway. my question is, can i apply for an exemption on the new wheels fee based on the fact i already had the car registered there before?

The charge is not for having an out of state car. If I recall correctly it is for a new register in the state without a plate. If you physically have a plate this charge is negated. If not then the charge will be added. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

By law you are supposed to turn the plate in when you no longer need it. I had to mail mine to FL when I moved to TX. If you mail it in they can look it up and give you a credit for it.
If you stay in FL and unregister the car you can take the tag in and get a surrendered plate slip. You can use that slip on any car you register in the future and save on the new plate fee.
When I went to TX in 2006 my car was put in my girlfriends name. Last week I just transfered it back to my name, and back to FL, and they looked up the tag I sent back.
Total cost was $125 IIRC. It's approx $85 plus $28 and other BS taxes. The $28 is for a new plate if you returned one in the past. If you never returned one you most likely have to pay the $225.

they allowed me to waive the $225 but it still cost me $250 for one car and $475 for the other. and i still don't have a FL license cause i was having trouble with the stupid eye test.
that was to register both of them until july 2012
