Hmm....I may be a tad rusty on all the specifics but....
The LS1 setup uses a reverse rotation self contained....mounted quite low on the engine. It is configured to be mounted straight up, meaning that the pulley shaft is directy above the impeller shaft. It uses the self contained mounting pattern, noticeably different from the engine oil lubricated D1.

The D1 is a normal rotation unit that is usually mounted up high on the engine to facilitate oil drainback. The LT1s use it pretty low on the engine so that part would have to be looked at to verify. The oil drainback really should not be below the oil level in the pan. As mentioned earlier, the mounting bracket for the D1 uses a totally different bolt pattern so you would be making your own brackets.

I have a real soft spot for the engine oil fed D1. It is an extremely tough unit, and is one of the most vicious sounding (at idle) head units out there that is run on the street. Those high strength steel gears ring like crazy, and it's one hell of a sound. It is a very excellent head unit but let's face it the self contained units and the F series head units made most people forget about the D-series.

I've gone through a few installs on 5.0's and from what I remember it will not work for a F-body. Unless of course you make you own custom brackets, then usually you can get anything to work.
