Default Callies cranks... AES 390's, horsepower??

i bought an AES 390, rated for 1200rwhp. with these components. Im shooting for 1000rwhp with a pair of turbonetics TC66's

Callies C-series Crank 3.825" stroke 5140 forging.
Callies H-beam rods with arp 2000 bolts
Diamond -15cc dished pistons

I got on callies website and the cranks are rated at 600rwtq max. I know callies under rates their product severely as do all manufacturers to cover their ***. but, to me, 600 is super super low. Is their anyone out there running this crank and making big power? reliably...? Id hate to get this thing together and it ******* fall apart. I see plenty of guys using the stock crank making 800-950rwhp and are fine. i would assume the callies crank is a way better piece than the stock crank. Seen where one guy said his callies crank broke. Am i just being paranod? I will only be spinning the motor to about 6500-6800rpm

I've seen a big thread about a DragonSlayer breaking but it was later revealed to be from long term use with an incorrect blower setup putting too much pressure on it.

Callies is top notch in my book, what does AES say about that choice of crank in a motor they built?

They said the engine i bought will handle 1000rwhp no problem. but the crank hp rating is really low. i dunno, maybe im just paranoid. they are a reputable engine builder and must be pretty confident on everything they sell...

Is that 1000rwhp just an advertised spec listed on their site or did you hear that straight from them in person? If i were you I would call them and discuss it with them, they may say you're fine with it or suggest you change it. I would want to hear straight from them

1200rwhp is listed on their site. the 1000rwhp is what he said verbally to me on the phone for my build. I asked him "will i b ok at the 1000rwhp mark with this setup?" he said "o ya, youll be prefectly fine." so....

that i dont know. Im supposed to call them tuesday to see if he got my heads flowed and cam ordered. Im supposed to go there friday to assemble the engine. brian is letting me come to their shop and hes going to help me build my own setup. so... i will def ask him that though. Im not sure how much a dragonslayer crank upgrade is. $600? maybe? but, they dont make it in a 3.825" stroke. they had to special order the 3.8" cranks when they offered them in their 390 before like a year ago or so..

What crank are you running tally?

urs was a 408? maybes thats the issue? 4.00" vs a 3.825" stroke. they used the 3.825 to get more strength of out it. IIRC it gave them 1/10" of more journal overlap.

been looking at callies cranks from different vendors and they are all listed as 4340 forging not 5140

I talked to Brian yesterday, and he told me that the 390 (3.8" stroke) crank is a 4340 forging from Callies. He assured me that 1000 HP will not be an issue, and that they were run at 1300hp with no issues. We shall see I guess..... hopefully my engine will be done next wk, and will be able to pick it up, on my way up or down from my vacation in Pigeon Forge, Tn.

heres my question... why would a company build a forged crank that cant handle the power a stock crank handles??? just look at all the SBE turbo cars on this forum that are getting it done with stock junk.. its all in how the motor is assembled as in balancing, clearances, ETC ETC. i know of a couple local cars around here with junk eagle rotating assembles. one is a BBC nitrous car other is a turbo SBC both cars make close to 1300+ whp

so id say if u have a callies crank u will be more than fine to make 1000 whp all day long no problem... AES knows what there doing and wouldnt sell u something if they didnt think it would not hold up to it..

^ this is exactly what i was thinking. 600rwtq is easy to hit in the FI world. I plan on running it and see what happens. It s a 99% street car doing mainly roll racing and just messing around with it on the weekends

thats a tough one ive never ran an aftermarket crank.
need to get callies and aes to get on the same page, if you dont one will point the finger at the other and leave you high and dry.

i agree aint no sense in rating a crank at 600

I had the same worries when I ordered my 398. Ended up going with the callies magnum crank as insurance. I too am aiming for 1200hp but with twin 72's. AES know what they are doing, Mike has been awesome to deal with.

No, same as yours. I am nervous as **** now, since mine will be a daily driver and don't feel like having to do this again. My trailblazer ss is sitting in pcs for the last 2 months.

my stock crank lasted longer in my rods pistons 347 than that callies crank lasted in my AES shortblock. The camshaft I had in that short block made peak power @ 5800 rpm so I never really spun it over 6K. I raced a local truck one night and it sounded like it spun a bearing and I was quite confused on why since I only spin it to 6K.... which it did when the crank cracked at the surface of the bearing.

Quick Reply: Callies cranks... AES 390's, horsepower??
