Default removing belt...came across a problem (pics inside)

hi people,

Well i was removing my belt because i wasnt making but half of the boost i should be making. So, i call the person i bought the car from, procharger and the shop that did the work and no one could tell me what size belt to buy.

The numbers were visible on the belt for awhile and i gave them to the local performance retailer to order but, they lost the belt number and didnt get it ordered. So, I was left to buy a belt and no one could tell me what to buy or what size anything i had on the car i purchased. (i know my bad for not getting all of the paper work on the engine but its a long story)

So, someone suggested i remove the belt and measure it and order it. Thats what i was going to do. "Off tonight, purchased and installed tomorrow and on the dyno formore tunning on saturday morning ...right?" maybe not

This is what my tensioner looks like. I am under the impression it should not have a groove in it. Please let me know if this is normal. If it is not normal, what is it a result of?

Thanks people.

Looks like your belt split in half and then the smaller section began digging into your idler pulley. Belts do tend to make grooves in the soft aluminum pulleys, but yours is very ugly. I would not put that back on the car or else you will be going through belts like no other.

Buy a new pulley or machine it flat.

Crystal, you have an 8-rib setup right? So you would want to find the same width pulley I think. Any idea of where it came from? Is it a stock ATI piece, SDCE, or something else?

seriously, ditch the stock ati tensioner system and get an sdce spring tensioner, i can't begin to tell you how good they work , i used to go through a belt every 2 weeks on average. now that i'm using the sdce stuff, i had the same belt for 20 k miles and it still looks good.

you also might want to check the bearings in that pulley; do they turn freely?

Well I'm glad you got it off. This is a common problem on the ATI LS1 F body kit. The tensioner pulley is soft and gets fubared right away. The bearings also seize but you'll know when that happens as the belt turns into molten melty rubber

I had camarogod98 here on LS1tech make me a custom steel tensioner pulley when I had the stock ATI stuff.

After dicking around with belts, slippage and bearings in the tensioner pulley out all the time, I went to another pulley set up, then a cog set up and then finally to the SDCE set up.

The SDCE set up as mentioned above kicks ***. KP is running my old ATI set up and he is still using the same belt that I sent with the kit.

www.sd-concepts.com
or PM SDCE here and Wendy will give you a rundown on cost and availability.
