Unless the wastegate is designed to exhaust into the atmosphere itself...it kind of depends on the gate...

It should have its own pipe, unless you like the noise.

As mentioned, you can run it either way, open (dump to atmosphere) or route back into the exhaust as you have drawn. If you want it not so loud then definitely return it back into the exhaust. Open offers a very little bite more free resistance and less turbulence in the DP.

If the down pipe goes to a muffler then yes a cutout could help.

I would add at least another small pipe to get the exhaust to under the car.

one think i read if you run it back into the pipe it should be at least 18" away from the turbo. but i may be wrong.

Venting to atmoshpere may sound cool. However, most state emission laws would look very dimly at venting raw exhaust the car would never pass any sniffer tests without the wastegate tied into the exhaust.

BTW, I've tried an open wastegate before, the noise gets very annoying, very fast and attracts way too much unwanted attention.

JMHO, but I would tie it back into the exhaust, you'll still hear it clearly

make its own pipe, don't run it to the downpipe itself, people have gained some good h/p running it seperate. run its own pipe down under the car and exit behind the front tire.

i wouldn't run a muffler just straight 3inpipe or whatever your using, cause a turbo is a muffler. less restriction

also backpressure on a turbo car is a bad thing

i have heard on imports (vw's audis and subarus) that when you vent the bov into the atmosphere the car riches up a little bit compared to venting it into the exhaust. im not sure if its true or not, but all of them are pretty big on motor things (not ricers) and they all ent into the exhaust

Another thing that you may consider is floating a valve...Now I understand that the turbo is going to give you some back pressure but it's going to be venting BEFORE the turbo...If you don't have good springs you may have a problem with this....Think of it like just running open headers with a little more back pressure...that may be another consideration to think about...Not saying it's going to happen but I'm pretty sure that it's a street car so the more reliable that you make it the better...

Venting to atmosphere with my Tial WG here, its not that bad when its open. As for emissions It really wouldn't affect emissions because the wastegate doesn't open until it sees max boost pressure that you're WG spring is rated at or where your boost controller is set.....so unless the emissions center puts your car on a load dyno and goes WFOT, then no exhaust will come out of it as its seeing absolutely no boost pressure.

'sides an Turbocharged LS1 isn't exactly street legal unless the kits come with a carb#.....STS I think has that or is in the process of getting that...but for the rest of us turbocharged LS1s guys, we are "really" not "emissions legal" anymore.
