Default how necessary are braided expansion joints?

How important are braided expansion joints on your hot side pipes when running two exhaust manifolds into one for a single turbo setup?

For example, say you want to run a single turbo setup on a V8. You locate the turbo on the left side very close to the left manifold, however you have to bring the right side exhaust all the way over to the left side so it too can feed the turbine. How important would an expansion joint be on that pipe?

you need some type of joint to have some give for the expansion and contraction.
I prefer to use Vbands for it, those will allow enough for the expansion/contraction, allow easy assembly and dissasembly, probably flow a little better, and not have to worry if they ever wear out.

They help in assisting of the expansion / contraction during heat cycles. I've seen and built a few with and without them. The most important factor is turbo bracing. If, for example, you have the turbo braced off the motor, they really aren't necessary. If, you have the turbo low and braced off the frame, it is wise to use them for movement between motor and turbo.

EDIT: yes...as Smokin says, you may also opt. for V-band assemblies but they are pricey. Has anyone found a good deal on those yet?

V-band clamps like this: http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/vb...203%20inch.htm ?

For the record, I've never bought anything from that place, just came across it while doing a google search for v-band clamps.
