Default Any info on sts rear mount turbo?

I was thinking about putting a rear mount turbo on my build ls1, does anyone have any experience with this unit, like ground clearance or any kind a problems?

Just do a search for STS here in the forums and you'll get an amazing # of results. Personally I like the kit. If set up correctly like ExoticPerformancePlus and others, ground clearance is not an issue at all because it is not the lowest point on the car. Check out EPP's website, they have a full step by step of an install of an sts kit. They are sponsors on the links to the right.

They do work well. Lots of installs and people are happy with them. The only problem reported is water getting in the intake. There is a waterproof sock for the air filter that solves the problem.

As mentioned, if installed correctly, clearance is not an issue.
We dont use any special brackets, just the two exhaust hangers that are on the car.

This one was before we welded the pipe, but you can see how high it is.

Im honestly REALLY REALLY surprised wiht how well the kits work...

put this into consideration...

The power used to power a turbocharger is exhaust gas velocity. When temperature drops in an exhaust system, so does it's velocity. This is important when considering placement of a turbocharger because the father back the turbo is from the engine, the greater the temperature drop will be. In this respect, putting the turbo's as close to the engine as practical will give the best turbo performance. Sometimes it is not practical to have a turbo very close to the engine, in those cases, making the manifold (header) from a material with a strong fatigue resistance will allow insulating of the pipe.

so if you really try, you can set this up to not loose any clearance? Or is there no possible way, you will always loose some clearance? Im lowered 2" so i dont think this kit will work out too well for me.

On a car that is lowered 2", I would not consider an STS kit. Bob

They've also added a splashguard shield for the bottom of the airfilter, to provide extra protection against water along with the sock.

You can see the water shield from the 2nd pic that trtturbo posted. STS includes that with the kit. I have the shield and also use the sock just as a preventative measure and it works pretty well. I wouldnt worry about it if I were you.

While selecting a particular power adder is a matter of preference, I have seen at least a dozen STS installs that have the turbo hanging down, WAY down. I saw one of the post on this thread that showed two photographs without the turbo hanging low. I just can't help but wonder why the myraid of installs I have seen are so low to ground that it could potentially pose a problem; especially on a car that is lowered.

To answer two concerns....no, you do not want to add an STS kit to a vehicle lowered 2". It WILL scrape on damn near everything if you do that.

Unless you're driving through standing pools of H2O, rain is not an issue. I drive my car in Hawaii. Few if any places in the US can top where I live for annual rainfall. No probs yet. I don't even use the filter sock. The splash guard does a very good job of deflecting water.

i like your exhaust pipe....I should be getting an STS soon and that seems like a good idea...looks better than the pipe they give you! lol.

also going to use my stock tips and mount them on the rear so it still looks factory...heheheheheh

When we mount the turbo as high as we can, the exhaust pipe and over the axle pipe run into each other. When the customers want the pipe out the back, we have to modify the exhaust.

yes the convertible kit is a little different, but not in the back.

we just leave the stock manifolds on. They retain heat better also.
