Default Why hasnt someone come up with an STS intercooler??

Hey guys..

I was wondering why someone hasnt come up with a intercooler for this system, besides TRT...

There system is Nice, just a little Expensive.. Considering you can get an intercooler off Ebay (about the same quality) for 200 bucks, and the piping for another 150.00

Someone could make big money!

because no one keeps the sts long enough to intercool it.. they just go front mount///\\hahah

but really anyone getting extreme into the sts kit probably had it custom or dished out for hte trt. name of the game. of course you can do it... but its easier to pay someone else to do it.

not as cheap as you think.
There is more than just intercooler and pipes.
polished aluminum is a little more than mild steel.
What about the silicone? Are you going to weld another bov flange on? The flange is $28.00. What about the steel to make the bracket; nuts, bolts, bead rolling the ends of the pipe.
T-bolt clamps?
I know people can do it less than what I charge, but you can open the box and be done in about 1-2 hours. Nothing else to buy, nowhere to go, just done.

damn $800 plus shipping?
FMIC=200
alum polished piping kit with extra pipes not needed=100-200
most come with Tbolts and couplers and some kits have bead rolled ends.
id have to see where the flange is for the BOV on an sts kit but u could leave that pipe or cut that pipe to work with the upgrade kit piping.
so assuming u mocked it up right on an sts car u could do it for $400 in parts, but then u dont make a profit.sounds like trt makes a good profit but offers a nice direct kit with no modding that the buyer has to do.

Dont get me wrong, TRT's kit is nice, but you should be able to do it WELL under 800 + shipping......

I mean you could probably sell double the kits if they were around 500 shipped

If its $800 for the kit and you think its $400 worth of parts. Even if he sold double the kits for $500 he'd be losing money, needs to be like four times the kits. 100 kits at $100 GP per kit = $10K 25 kits at $400 gp per kit = 10k
My custom intercooler on an sts costs
$300.00 intercooler 24x10x3
$310.00 machine shop costs for moving inlet and outlet and adding brackets
$250.00 custom mandrel bent piping
$125.00 silicone couplers and I'm still using the cheap worm clamps.
$985.00 total and I'm sure there was more small stuff that adds a few more dollars.
damn I should have bought a TRT kit

How would he be losing money, if he could build them for let say 400 dollars.......

and sell them for 500 dollars..

Thats 100 dollars PROFIT per intercooler kit.....no matter how many he sells, hes not LOSING money

I've got $110.00 in silicone alone. I went through a couple of places for a transition 90* elbow, but some were low quality. I found a decent one and it cost me $60.00 just for the elbow.
The wedlers to tig and mig are not cheap.
Dont get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a smart ***, but spending that amount will not get as much as you think. I even make sure that I make the bracket so that the intercooler hangs in the lip of the nose so it doesnt push it down. I dont use mild steel that will rust. Its all thin walled polished aluminum.
I have more than $500 in them.

To give a logical answer to the original question--the market is tiny. I don't think enough people want this product to support mass-market style low pricing. If you sell a million units, a $1 profit per unit gets you a million dollars. If you sell 10 units, a $500 markup only gets you 5 grand. How much is development time of a properly fitted kit worth to most manufacturers?

Sure it is, but do you think there will be no cutting? If you piece it together, you will more silicone and clamps. If not, you will have to get it tig'd together. What about bead rolling the ends. I wish I made $500 each, but its not even close.

If its that simple than you should become a sponser and sell your own kit. Billy's prices are reasonable for a well thought out kit with quality parts.

I am not bashing Billy's kit... I was wondering why no one has brought any competition into the market

Not a big enough market to warrant alot of competition.

whats the point? if you use quality silicone ( 7$ a piece for straights not to mentioin TRANSITIONS are 16$ a piece) quality T bolts are 3.50-4.50 a piece. count up the pieces and you got a hefty $$$ investment in silicon and t bolts alone. including the cost of actually bending the metal brackets ( cnc bent to ensure quality 100% fitment) shops dont exactly charge cheap prices to bend small quantity orders. added shipping. insurance, any warranty involved and customer service. 100$ per kit isnt enough to survive in this industry. esp for somethign that would take 2 hours assembly/packing and welding.

if it was so profitable. why dont you do it yourself ? simple - not worth it or you simply dont have the skills to promote and provide a quality and well fitting kit. you can make yourself a birthday cake for 5$ instead of buying one at the store for 30-40. A lot of things in this world you can do yourself for cheaper, but you dont, why because you dont know how or you dont have the time to deal with it.
