Default Bad gas mileage

Hey all:
Having a case of bad gas mileage: took me 1/4 of a tank to go about 30 miles. My check engine kept coming on the previous week signaling a bad gas cap- so I got a new one. Now, I'm getting the shittiest gas mileage EVER. Could the cap be the problem? Or the O2 sensors? Do O2 sensors throw a code? If anyone has any experience, please put it up here. Id really appreciate it.

Yes, O2 sensors will throw a code. If they aren't working right, and because it's a closed loop system, it will snowball you to something like what you're currently going through.
