Default Fuel Pump and Lean condition

My boss has an 02 Trans Am and he got a SES light on it. The light comes and goes from time to time. Car runs fine though. He took it into the dealer and they told him it was running lean and the fuel pump is bad. They want close to $1000 to change it for him. Is this sounding right? The car has almost 50,000 miles on it. Could it possibly be a dirty fuel filter causing it to run lean because of a sortage of fuel. He doesn tthink the fuel filter had been changed on it.

Thanks,
Andy

Sounds like they are shooting in the dark. O2 maybe bad? I would just do the pump myself with a walbro save around 900 dollars. I highly doubt its the pump.

I would put in new o2s or run a wideband o2 sensor kit..... LC-1...

Then I would run a bosch in tank pump like doug rippie uses....
