Default Tank removal

My vacuum has gone bad on my gas tank and needs replacement. And I need to remove the gas tank. Does anyone have instructions on how to remove the gas tank and the other processes to get to the gas tank?

Thanks

unplug all lines coming from the tank, they are all around or between the fuel filter and the tank, unbolt the filler neck in the wheel well, take gas cap off and unscrew the plastic piece that is in the fuel door, unbolt the 2 bolts that hold the tank in and pull those 2 straps off, pull tank out. do this with 1/4 tank or less of gas.

I actually have to do exactly the same thing. It seems the pressurized plastic fuel line connector that rests on the top of the tank is leaking.

I've been told the rear end needs to be dropped and perhaps the exhaust too. Anyone have any tips? (Why couldn't GM just make an access hole for the tank is beyond my comprehension!)

It's going to be fun! heh.

Thats what the dealership told me, that impalas and some other cars have access points in the trunk but camaros and trans ams was built without them so.. the joy of an f-body lol.

I have a cat back and they didnt mention anything about the exhaust but said the rear would have to go and Im really not that excited about it haha.

Having asked around it doesn't seem it should be "that bad" actually. Just make sure to drain the tank first. There are a couple posts on dropping the rear end and draining the tank on some previous pages.... but I just got a Helm manual so hopefully that will guide me very well.

Besides, I just think about how much money I'll save, most of which is labor. If it takes 15 man hours that's already $1000+ at $70/hr garage rate. Grab a friend and you'll do it in a weekend.

The dealership said it would take 5 hours just to drop the rear at a total price of $350. But I think Im going to get a local trust worthy shop to give it a go.

On a 99+ car, you don't have to drop the rear to get the tank out. Just let it hang down as far as it goes. You will need to remove the exhaust and upper panhard rod.

The exhaust is welded in. Would it better smarter to cut the exhaust and weld it back rather than removing the rear?

That sounds more like a personal weekend job than a dealership steal for the rear.

Thanks alot

tanks are harder to get out due to the filler neck not being a rubber hose. and the tank not being plastic
