Default Fuel pump install???

I am installing a walbro gss340 fuel pump in my 98 ta tank. I got everything out and have a few questions. It looks like I have to butt splice the new plug in place of the factory plug for it to work. Is this going to be a safety issue since it will be inside the tank? What about the hot lead? Also, the last car I did had a bucket that the pump was in...this car has no bucket but has a plastic top and bottom piece on the stock pump. The bottom of the walbro pump will not fit throught the hole on the bottom plastic piece so that the filter can attach...I can fix this, but is this common? I thought they had a bucket that they went in?? The last car I did was a 94 LT1 car. Anyone with pics would be great.
