Default How to determine?: two or three series carrier?

First of all, what does that mean, and second of all, how do you know if gears are intended for a two or three series carrier. There is a part # on the side of the gears if that helps at all?

First, there were two differential housings, or carriers. A series 2 carrier was used if the car had 2.73 or 3.08 gears. A series 3 carrier was used if the car had 3.23 or 3.42 gears. Your car has 3.42 gears stock (as did all M6s) so you have a series 3 carrier.
It sounds like you have a set of gears in-hand. If you know what brand they are, you could Google that brand and part number. Or someone here may know if you post the info.
