Default 10 bolt question?

I have a 97 Z28 with traction control. I am told my original rear was 4 channel due to the traction control. I have a 12 bolt in it I am removing and want to install a 10 bolt. Can I get a 3 channel rear from a LS1 and just use my backing plates and brakes? Will that make the traction control operational? Are the widths the same? Any other issues I need to know about? Thanks!

James

In other words, what exactly makes it 4 channel?

Also if I find a 4 channel LS1 rear I was told I would need the LS1 brakes also to make it work or could I bolt up my backing plates and brakes? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get a rear asap and don't want to get the wrong thing.

A three channel rear end has ABS. A 4 channel rear end has ABS and traction control. A 'channel' is just a way of describing the means for a speed sensor to gauge the wheel speed. On a 3 channel rear end, the two front wheels have sensors, and there is one sensor on top of the rear end housing that reads for the whole rear. On a 4 channel rear end, there is a speed sensor at every wheel. 4 channel rear ends have reluctor wheels on each axle, 3 channel rears have one big reluctor ring on the differential. Because a 4 channel has a sensor at each rear wheel it can see the difference in speed between one wheel and the other, and ta-da, you have traction control.

Because it has a spool with 4:30 gears. I don't mind the gears that much but the clunking and such from the spool is annoying. I am not racing the car anymore and may even use it to do some runs to see family that can be 500 miles one way or so. If I keep the 12 bolt I will have to get a entire new set up and get it rebuilt with a posi unit. I don't have that much money right now. I can get a 10 bolt and sell the 12 bolt and actually have a few dollars left over.
