As of now I have swaped a ls1 and t56 from a 01 camaro ss into my 73 vette. I have stock gears of 3.08 with a 26" tire. My rpm in 6th doing 70 is 1393. And it sucks *****.where is the ls1 most happy? I was liking the idea of 4.11s which ould put around 1859. Not sure if motor mods matter but I think its a ls6 cam and intake with a 25% ud and headers.

I think 4.10s are perfect gears for a 6-speed stock they came with 3.42's which would still be a big improvement over what you have now. FWIW my car was doing alittle over 2000 rpm at 70

The lower you keep it, the better your gas mileage will be, but it will also act sluggishly if you don't downshift.
With 3.42s, I used to cruise around 1600-ish RPMs at 65-70 MPH...with 4.11s now, that is closer to 2000 RPMs, which tends to start droning a little with my exhaust. It is a lot more responsive on the highway without downshifting, but it gets worse gas mileage and is louder.
If you do mostly highway driving, it might be worthwhile to bump it up to 3.42 or 3.73 out back...4.11s are fun around town, and not bad on the highway, but a little much if you have to commute with it.

I'm getting 28mpg at 1900 on the HW (M6).. Right where you can tell the engine is almost neutraled... Not over-revved for the speed and not bogging.. That's where the money is. But I have a cam too, so it all depends. Just gotta find that sweet spot where you don't have to give it much throttle and it seems to carry on it's own but not bogging.

^ Weight really depends.. I'm at 3400 in "street" trim as I call it. I've done some weight reduction, but have HEAVY *** wheels and a dual 12" box in the trunk with dual amps. (There's your weight ratio right there! )
Bone stock TA's and Camaro's with ground effects seem to dial in around 3600.
