axle bearings(there are no inner bearings) are lubed by/with the gear oil in the rearend.
to access the axle bearing, the axle has to be removed.
when an axle bearing goes,it typically takes the axle with it,not that the axle goes bad,but the surface of the axle where the bearing rides.
replacement 'axle saver bearing kits' typically cause a lot of grief in that they shift the axle outward and prevent proper assembly of the axle into the carrier.

It just started making noise, so i parked it to avoid further damage. Still trying to figure out if it is the bearings. It makes a "metal clapping" noise at high speed, nothing at avarage speed, and a deep whining sound when slowing down. Any ideas?

at that point,I would do a drain & remove rearend cover for a initial visual inspection of internals.
since it's an 01,it would have a 'torsen' 'posi'.
could be one of many things,frozen brake caliper pin(s),axle bearings,bent axle,carrier bearings,torsen problem,gearset.
