Question '01 SS 'Vert with GU5 3.23 but '02 RS with GU6 3.42 - WHY?!

I don't get it, why does my '01 SS 'Vert come with RPO GU5 3.23 gears but my '02 RS came with GU6 3.42 - anyone know WHY?!

Seems odd the higher trim level car came with a lesser gear ratio.

TIA!

Auto Z28s got 2.73 or 3.23
All Auto SSs got 3.23
All Z and SS M6s got 3.42s.

If your RS is a V6 then I dunno what they came with. The auto really doesn't need a lot of gear to get moving bc 1st gear is steep in the 4l60e.

the RS Y87 V6 performance package for automatics came with 3.42 gears.
why GM thought 3.42s' were necessary over the 3.23s',only GM can answer.
most standard V6s' came with 3.08.

Oddly my RS is not a Y87, nor does it have the G80 (LSD RPO code)...

I just found it really odd my 3.8L has the better gear than my 5.7L Vert.! -- GM seems to make odd choices.

Question

So will I notice the 3.23 -> 3.42 change much in my SS, let's say seat of the pants? Just a tad less MPG with the newer gear then?
