Default 3 channel axle in four channel rear?

Is it possible to put a three channel axel in a four channel rear and just install the relucter rings on the axels? Or are they different lengths?

i just did this about a month ago. took a 3ch rear, slapped my 4ch axles in it, used a plug on the top hole, and mounted it. was very easy, gotta swap the backing plates also.
