Need a new driveshaft, have a few questions:
I recently twisted the stock aluminum DS on my third pass at the track. I didn't realize they were so weak, but I guess I should have looked at it better when I upgraded to the 9".
Anyway, I need to buy a replacement. I really don't need to go crazy; the car will never be over 400rwhp and it doesn't see alot of racing. I'm looking at the Spohn Extreme shaft ($360, with the 1350 yoke) and I saw the inland empire at Summit for $400, plus I'd have to change the yoke.
Is there anything else in this range I should be looking at? Or anything else about getting a new driveshaft that I should consider? Trans is a t56.
Thanks.

The AL aam shaft uses is 65 wall and i have even seen there welds come apart.
Don't be afraid of AL, it is very strong.
The cm is heavier then Al, you may not think it is but it is enough to make 7 hundredths to 1 tenth difference.

The PST 3.5" alum driveshaft in my '99 Z28 never gave us any problems.
Here is a link to where I sell them on my website.

plus I'm sure you don't have the "standard" trans yoke on that shaft.

I have hundreds of cars that picked up atleast 7 hundredths or a full tenth losing the cm or dom steel shaft...
Even picked up mpg..
If you lose 10 lbs in the driveline and don't pick up, you got problems and probably consistency..

I have seen quite a few that broke on the weld and actually split the weld, i'll look again and see, but i don't see any .090 , .083 and .065 yes...

Ive got one cut away right here on my bench. .090. I think your weights, and gains might be a little off for an fbody....

I got .083 or 2.11mm...
Only seen aam have .083 or 2.11 mm up to 4" and 4" and after then gets to .090 or 2.30mm, even looked in the aam book and 3" and 3.5 only had 2.11mm or .083
The gains by less weight work the same for everything, I have cars out there weighing 2000 lbs trucks up to 7800 lbs, everyone of them gained in performance using lighter shafts.
Everyone of my competitor cars all picked up when losing driveline weight... At the least they picked up 7 hundredths, and some got a full 10th..
Doesn't matter if its a camaro or a truck, they all gain...
Going from stl to AL is half the weight or more in gains, going from AL to CF is a couple grams of gain.
It also depends on the car and driver if every pass you do something different and change the time a lot from one pass to another it's gonna be hard to tell if you gained anything
I have 2 brothers in SS they can't use AL legally, both same cars, same motor, but one brother listened to me let me do what i wanted with his shaft and saved him close to 8 lbs in stl, that got him 6 hundredths faster then his brother, who's car is only different in the shaft...
