Default Changing rear carrier and pinion

Ok so here goes. I don't have alot of money but I'm very mechanic friendly. My question I want to install my 3 series carrier and my 3.42 gear in my 98 camaro auto. It has currently a 2 series carrier and 2.73 gear. I know I gave to get install kit and I'm going to get and new rear end cover for extra strength and extra fluid cap. What is the best way to do this. Everything us together is it just a simple swap. Like take one out and put the other one in or what.

Please if you could give me a answer and with step by step install

Look in a service manual. It's more complicated than you think. Read over the complete procedure BEFORE you order any parts. GM gears will be easier to set up than most aftermarket gears because they are marked to make picking the correct pinion shim easy.

Use/read as many guides as you can to help you, but its really not hard. The gears should set up really good using factory shims.

I just went through this myself. Just do all the reading up you can before you start, you'll be alright. I'd never done a rear end before either, but I am an aircraft mechanic and felt comfortable attempting it. The only part I had a hard time with was the crush sleeve on the pinion gear. Didn't know it took over 400 ft/lbs to get it started crushing - was not in the write ups. I had to get a big impact gun to do it. I took my time on the setup, checking backlash, etc. It drives real good. Went from 2.73 to 3.42 gears. I wouldn't want lower than that for my daily driver. It really woke the car up, let me tell you.
