Default To 4.10, or not to 4.10?

I've got a 00 M6 T/A with bolt-ons. Planning on ported 243s and a 228/232ish cam.

I daily drive the car about 40-50 miles per day to and from school, so with the mods I'll already have my mpg won't be outstanding, but I'm willing to give up a little of that for performance.

I know 4.10 will improve my ETs, and lower my mpgs as much as anything else, the question is would it be considered worth it on a DD. Or would you guys recommend something like a 3.73 to meet in the middle?

I am in the same boat with a A4. In your case with a 6 speed, I think 4:10s would be fine.

even with all those mods you should still be able to knowck down mid 20's on the hwy with the 4.10's because thanks to 6th gear you will only be turning a little under 2k on the hwy at 80. 4.10's in an m6 are a blast so yes i say go for it, 3.73's are way to close to 3.42's to be worth it if you really are scared of4.10's motive makes 3.90's which are a nice middle ground.

Thanks for the input! I've got about 1500 to spend on mods at the moment, so I'm thinking 4.10s, SFCs, and a PHB, then maybe some appearance mods look for a deal on some wheels.

4:10s will not lower your milaege significantly at all. I lost less than 1 whole mpg after installing 4:10s.

^ My thing was how much of first gear do you lose with 4.10's on an M6? (Street car) They seem more of a drag gear to me.
Some may say it's streetable, some may not.

personally, i'd stick to 3.73's. been there done that trying to make 4.10's work on the highway. which leads me to a question.....a guy further down says he's only spinning just under 2,000rpm at 80?? what's the overdrive ratio on those trannys?? i know on the getrag in my gt it's 0.65, and at that i'm spinning 2100rpm at 70. also at that 70, i was watching the gauge last tuesday night.....was averaging 27.5 with the cruise control set. this on an engine with only 900 miles so far.

they are streetable. moreso today than 25 years ago. the problem is that they're really still a bit high for a street daily driver. best compromise is 3.73's. they give you excellent launch, let you use all of your power band, and you don't come anywhere near running out of engine at the top end.

sixth gear in a t 56 is .50. i have put in three sets of 4.10's two in my 10 bolt and one in my 12 bolt. perfect for an m6. drove it to san antonio about 220 miles and got 23mpg with and ms4 running 75+ the whole way.

I did the same thing when I was in your situation. The 4.10s are bad for daily driving IMO I really wish I went with 3.73s they would be just perfect! The RPMs for normal driving conditions mess up what gear you should be in from my experience. I daily'ed 30k miles with 4.10s

I'm running about 1700 RPMs at 80 with with gears at the moment, so I doubt 4.10s would only bump me up to just under 2k, but I could be wrong. The fact that I do a TON of highway driving is why I considered the 3.73s so strongly. If I didn't drive the car on the highway as much as I did, it would be 4.10s hands down. I may wait a bit for a gear swap though and go with some suspension mods instead. Either way, thanks a lot for the input guys.

you'll be shocked at the improvement you'll feel with suspension modifications.

I love my 4.10, I don't think they are bad at all on the interstate. If you are an M6 and are all-motor I would say 4.10 or 3.90 all day.

Got 4.10s in my A4 and this thing ******* rips around town anything more than 1/4 throttle from a stop will break the tires loose, but it will never see highway driving thats for sure.

3.90 definitely seems like a legit option.

My MPG is still in the 20's. It has more to do with tune and over all build than gear choice.

I have a bolt-on m6 as well, I have 4.10's and commute about 50 miles for school and work. My mpg averages about 18, I dont exactly "baby" my car so I think if you go 4.10's than you will be alright. Either way you go, you wont be dissapointed.
