3.23 vs 3.42 vs 3.73
hi i have a lt1 auto camaro spraying a 125 shot of nitrous every thing else is stock. i have 2.73s from the factor and my buddy has 3.23 he will give me. i was wondering is it worth the extra 60 or 70 bucks to get 3.42. will i notice the differnce in 1/4 mile times between the 3.23 and 3.42. also how much will the 3.42/3.23 lower my times from the 2.73. is it worth getting a 3.73 it is my DD and dont want to rev it out on the highway. thanks!

my ls1 z28 was a factory 2.73 car. with the same mods i have now, with 2.73s i ran a best of 13.49. with the 3.23 swap (i only changed them bc the rear had a slight leak), i ran a best of 12.98. now that 12.98 was in -800 DA weather, so its really not a great comparison, but i'd say from 2.73 to 3.23 would drop about .2 seconds. at least that's my experience.

I'd say go cheap for now, especially if they're free. 3.23 will be a good move for you (stock SS ratio).
I went from 2.73 to 3.42 in my 383 IROC and loved it.
On my SS, I went from 3.23 to 3.42 to 3.73.
3.73 gears are great (fast) but my mpg has gone down.
Probably due to the fact that I get on it so much more.

The difference between 3.42 and 3.73's isnt that noticeable in normal and even spirited driving. My buddy had 3.73s in his 98z and I had 3.42's when I was still an auto. Both cars were pretty damn close if I didnt tell you the gears were different you wouldn't have noticed it. If I was the op I would go 3.73's if I didnt drive the car on the freeway a whole bunch if I dd the car i would do 3.42's. My 3.42's would do 2500rpm at 80 while his 3.73's would be near 2800.

Is there a differnce in the 3.23 to the 3.42 is now my biggest question. i think i ruled out 3.73 because i do use the car alot. what i am saying am i not going to be happy with the 3.23 at the strip and want to switch to the 3.42 if there will even be a differnce between the two gears is my next question

Do not take the used 3.23s. Yes their is a slight difference between 3.23&3.42s but probably not enough to tell. Just get a new set of 3.42s and you'll be glad you did. It was hard to make up my mind between 3.42s or 73s as I do a bit of highway driving to. I chose 3.73s, it really not that bad, and coming from 2.73s it made a HUGE difference. And with a good tune, I really couldn't tell the loss of MPG.

take it from experience i have ran 373 ,342 and stock 323 in my ta you will love the 373's unless you do a hole bunch of highway driving like long commutes back and forth to work and such ,it will wake your car right up!

I had 3.23 with boltons and ss3600. Averaged 18-20mpg.
Last spring did 3.73 with heads, cam, intake, and upgraged boltons. Now I average 16-18mpg.
Not a bad trade off IMO and IDK why people are so worried about spinning more rpm on the highway. My car is on the highway alot. Its really not a big deal at all.
