Default 2 channel or 3 channel rear???

Here it goes... I have a 2000 trans am a4 with 2.73s in the rear(barf)... The car has abs and no tcs I was wandering if that means I have a 2 channel rear? Also I hear the 2 channel rears are somewhat limited on what gears I can run. I plan on buying a s60 when the funds allow (due to a 6 speed swap soon)... I just want to throw some gears in her and have a little more fun with the auto before I make the trans/rear swap

2 or 3 series and 3 or 4 channel*. If i were a betting man I'd say 3 channel and 2 series . Under 3.08 gears are 2 series i think. And tcs uses 4 channel i think

Sorry I mistyped. Lol dang smart phone... Thanks for the reply! I just took the car out to the track last weekend and the best e.t. I got was a 14.8 (8000 da) and the 273s are killing my 60 ft. (2.3) a buddy of mine I was racing against managed a 14.4 and he had 3.23s. (1999 z28) so I think getting a better gear would help big time!

non tcs is a 3 channel and w/tcs is a 4 channel. I run 3.73 gears in my 4 channel and I run 3.90 gears in my 3 channel...non tcs. 3.90 handles well but needs new tires. And 4 channel has Nitto 555's and holds pretty good.

Did you feel a difference going from the stock ratio to the 373s and 390s?

DEFINITELY! Especially if it is a 2.73 car to start with. Going from that to a 3.73 is a huge difference.

not regular 3 series 3.73s',you would need 'THICK' 3.73s' made for a 2 series carrier.

Thanks guys for the help! So by 'thick' you mean thicker than the standard 3 series 3.73s? Also what ring and pinion brand do you guys recommend?

Thanks bud. So I wonder if the 2 series thick gears can handle more power than a 3 series gear??? Because like I said I am about to do a six speed swap and it would be nice if the 2 series gear type could handle the abuse better than a 3 series.

I can not see where one would be stronger than the other as the base on the 2 is thicker but the depth of the teeth would be same, I think the weak link is the peinon and not the ring
just my $0.02' Johnny

When I bought both cars, they were already gear'd. I honestly don't know what a 2.73 would feel like. LOL sorry
