Default Rear gear suggestions

I have a 2002 Z28 with a newly rebuilt A4 with a Circle D 3200 Stall that will handle up to 500 hp. I am not seeing anywhere near that. Car has your basic bolt-ons and a tune for now. However, I will be looking to go with a head and cam package that will get me closer to about 450 hp range in the future, with other upgrades as well. I do not take the car to the track, but I do like to have fun with the car out on the street. My question is. Should I just get some 3:42's, 3:73's and install them in my stock series 2 carrier or should I just try and find a series 3 rear with the 3:73's from a junkyard or from a member on this forum? Has anyone done a this with there stock series 2 carrier rear? Pro's-Cons' All I know is something has to be done to get this rear matched up with my Stall.

There should be no issue with them in the 2 series carrier, the only thing different is the ring gear is thicker. I have a 3600 stall and 3.73s and I think its great. Im sure youll like the jump to either of the gear choices you listed since I assume you have a 2.73 gear now with the 2 channel.

plenty of forum members use the aftermarket 3.42 and/or 3.73 'thick' gears with their 2 series carrier without problems. with an A4,3.73s' seem to be the more popular choice. mpg loss between the two will be about .8(8/10)mpg at freeway legal speeds.
