Default leaking pinion seal an annual event

This is the 3rd year in a row I've noticed a puddle forming under my 12-bolt. Bought it new from Strange in '07 and it worked great until 2014. Since then every spring when I start driving it more frequently it leaks from the pinion seal. It's around $200 for the shop to fix and I'm tired of it. Last year I asked why this happens and said I don't want this to become an annual thing especially since I got 7 problem free years out of it. He said heat causes the leak and that's just the way it is sometimes. I don't buy it, this shouldn't be a yearly maintenance item. I'd like to do it myself but in the rear end faq, it's described as something more fit for a professional. Is my local shop just doing a poor job? I've been using 2 quarts of Lucas 85w-140 gear oil with 4oz of additive in accordance with the owners manual.

I knew something was wrong when the rear all of a sudden began to howl louder than usual during decel. I was hoping the seal wouldn't leak but looks like it is. I just finished a 2,000 mile road trip to Vegas and back when the rear started howling louder.

Needs to be pulled apart by a competent mechanic and settings, parts need to be looked at. Trouble is, few know how to get differentials spot on. Once you find someone, don't let him go. Proper diff builders are far and few.

Is your vehicle lowered? if so did you adjust the pinion angle?

I didn't lower it on purpose but after doing KONI shocks and some tubular components it lowered a bit, not sure how much. Still has stock springs so it's probably an inch or so.

Today was going to be the day I replaced the seal but things didn't work out quite the way I thought. When I removed the driveshaft, I could see the seal was dry. The leak was coming from behind the nut. I wasn't sure what size the nut was so I was trying different sockets, when I put the 1 1/8" socket on there and tested the fit, I was able to turn the nut with no resistance, it was completely backed off. I called the shop that touched it last and they want me to drive it to them so they can determine if it was their fault or not. I'm sure they forgot to put thread locker on it or something. If I'm going to drive this, it would be about 3 miles. Could I just snug the nut down? Any tips on what to do now?
