2.73 to 3.42's. What do I need?....besides the gears, of course! (A4)
I'm looking at swapping out my 2.73's to 3.42's. What's all involved with the series 2 to 3 carrier change? Basically, I need to know what I need to get as a total to do the swap. It's an A4. I have a pro to do it. Anybody looking to sell a set of 3.42's? I have an HPP3 coming, but I've been reading about problems with downshifting/kickdown even WITH the programmer. Any info would be great. Thanks!!

10 Bolt gear upgrade
Hi
The 3.42 will need a series 3 carrier. That means replacing your existing differential. As you have a 1998, it has the Auburn (same as mine). It is know to have reliability problems, so an upgrade to a Torsen or Detroit Truetrac would be wise (assuming you have the budjet). The alternative is to use a 3.42 thick gear with your series 2 carrier. They are readily available from most aftermarket gear companies.
I just whent through this with a professional shop and they refussed to use thick gears in a 10 bolt, under any circumstances. So rely on your pro when it comes to using thick gears. If they have good experience with them, it should be OK. Anyone out there have experience with thick gears and can add somthing to this discussion?
