Default Gasket Replacement on a 10 Bolt

Can someone answer for me wheather or not the replacement 10 bolt gaskets need to be modified to work? I remember reading a thread once where someone mentioned that it was important to cut out the area of the gasket where the holes to the axles are. According to the post this needed to be done to allow oil into the axle shaft area????? I personally can't understand this since it is a sealed area so perhaps I misunderstood but I want to have it clarified before I put the rear end back together so i can put it in the car.
Any help is appreciated.
