Default anyone get lucky with stock shims

I am setting up my rear my car. I had my new bearings pressed on the carrier. After I got my pinion in and the preload set I threw the stock shims in and had a hell of a time getting the carrier in but finially it went in. For some reason it came out a lot easier than it went in. Anyway I torqued the cap bolts down and checked the backlash and it is .006. I was kinda of amazed that I got this with the stock shims. Just curious if anyone else thought this was strange?
