Default Gear oil temperature?

I think my gear oil must be at least 180*, the housing is so hot I can just touch it momentarily. Is this a cause for concern?

Operating temperature should be 100 degrees above ambient temp.

I've got a differential temp gauge on my car since I'm involved in ORR. Running down the freeway at 75 mph after about 20 minutes my diff temp settles on about 210f. If I do an open tracking event it will peg the gauge at 300f within 20 minutes if I don't use my diff cooler. 180 is WELL within reason IMO. Saying that it should run 100f above ambient is false IMO since differant vehicle speeds make drastically differant amount of heat. In town it probably wouldn't get over 100-120f, on the hwy is would be much higher.

Thanks for the input guys youv'e made me feel more at ease I thought I was running way too hot. It seems to me with those potential operating temperatures synthetic is probably the best bet.
