Question play in the DS, clunking in and out of 1st...are they related?

Ive been getting alot of clunking from my car going in and out of first. Ive also noticed that there is some play in the DS when the ebrake is on. i put the rear up on jackstands and spun one side then quickly tried to spin the other the same way. there is definatly a gap there. is there supposed to be any play in it ? when should i not be able to spin the tires? just trying to see if the rear is bad or if the gears are worn so I can justify getting a new rearend.

It's a 10-bolt. That's your problem. Now get that 9".

thats too easy im trying to figure out what the problem is before i replace it. if its just gears or something, then its no problem to replace them. spend 500 now for a seldom track car or 2800+ for a 12 bolt that will hardly see the track?
