i drive a 6-speed, but from what i've heard, 3:73 is the optimal choice for the auto. If you already have 3:23's, id just leave those and go with an aftermarket converter. just my .02. hth

After much thought I finally settled on 3.90's for my 2000 SS A4 with a PT4000 converter and a Moser 12 bolt. I had been going back and forth between the 3.73's and the 4.10's when I got my new Summit catalog and right there in the Richmond 12 bolt car rear gear section was a 3.90 offering. I ordered it today. I'm more interested in track performance than highway driving, hence my decision. The reason I didn't go with 4.10's is that I'm getting ready to install another engine and expect trap speeds in the 130 range so I'd run out with the 4.10's. The 3.90's should be perfect for a lot of people that have been trying to decide between the performance of the 4.10's and the relative streetability of the 3.73's. Just my opinion of course.

set long term goals for your car...if your staying with a 4l60e then see what gears you can use and still cross the traps in 3rd gear at your given rpm
im running 3.42's and 3rd gear at ~6700 rpm is about 130-135, which is perfect for me after i put the bottle back on the car...
if you are running n/a and aren't planning on a power adder 3.73's are pretty nice, but it will cost you more in gas mileage...
3.42's are a very nice gear with a 4l60e

I have 3.70's in my 9"! i like them! at the track i passed through the traps before shifting.. can't remember what RPM though.. but i was shifting at 6400 down the track!
3.23 and 3.42 are too small IMO! 3.70 or 3.73 is perfect for street and strip!
I daily drive my car a lot too! fuel mileage isnt the best but its still pretty good for a H/C bolt on car!

just put 4.10s in it...we'll see how the track likes them though. The street really doensn't like my tires. shift points are about 28, 65, 110 through the gears.

3.42s are a good street/strip gear. Best all around gear IMO. Not worth swapping to if you already have 3.23s though. If you're going for max ET and want some streetability, 3.73s. If you're ready to burn some gas and get the max at the track 4.10s.

I say if you dont spend much time over 160 MPH, go with the 3.73's.
This car has 3.73's (or had-i think tbyrne parted this car out)
