Default Noisy Rear End

I have a '98 T/A with about 15K miles. I'm getting a lot of rearend noise during downshifts, but mainly when I round a corner with the brakes applied. The noise is a low grinding sound, coupled with what sounds like bound springs howling. When I round a corner without the brakes applied, or hit bumps - the car is nice and solid. I've had the Pontiac dealer look at it - the U-joints, springs, shocks, and brake pads are fine. They wanted to lube the sway bar for $125, but I opted to do it myself - all to no avail. I'm leaning toward the rear end being shot, or maybe I'll be lucky enough to have sticky pads. Anyone ever run into any thing like this?
