For it to be adjusted to its best, you'll need a tune. If you want it close, you can use a handheld programmer. The gear swap will throw off both your trans and speedo. Both will need to be adjusted. When I went from 2.73 to 3.73 in my 'bird, I used my HPPIII to set it temporarily. Later on I had the car tuned and couldn't be happier. If you go the handheld route first, make sure to remove that tune BEFORE having a custom tune done.

Are you saying a custom tune for a gear change is better than a regular power programmer? What can they do better with a custom tune to remedy shift points than a power programmer? I remember I put a 3.73 gear in my 1994 z28 which had a 2.73 to start. The car wouldn't even shift at full throttle. I then got a Hypertech programmer and programmed my car's computer. The car shifted nice at full throttle. But under normal acceleration, my car's shift points were way off and the car shifted like ****. Ultimately I ended up frying to transmissions. I hope when I put my 3.73's in my '02 WS6 auto and get a professional tune it will shift normal.

Tuning the trans shift points can make the car more fun to drive and more to your liking. A hand held can not adjust the part throttle shift points nor the TCC apply/release times. So you get more satisfying results from a tune.
