Default Need Help ASAP!!!

I was driving today and went to pass a car so romped on it a little bit in third...right around 80 a disgusting grinding sound occured and the rpms just shot up while I was not moving any faster. I pulled over and put it into first and started going reallllly slow...as I would get around like 15-20 MPH the grinding would start again and I would stop moving forward while the motor kept revving up. I babied it home and had it towed to my local shop who has done a lot of work on my parents cars. They are convinced its a tranny/clutch related problem while I figured the 10 bolt/4.10's had finally reached the end of their time. There is right under 28K miles on the car and there were no symptons as far as anything goes. It just happened all of a sudden. You guys have any ideas? Thanks so much for any input?

It sounds like the posi unit or gears to me. Its a hellofa lot easier to pull the rear end cover and check that first than to pull the trans out to check that. I would check the rear end first and go from there.
