Default Driving around with a Spool?

1st let me say, I can't wait to launch my Hod Rod with the spool in it at the track. (It should be finished real soon).

What I want to know is how bad is it really on the street. My Pops had one in our super stock car that he drove on the street some but all he said was it cherped the tires a little turning into a praking lot.

I know you are not to drive it in the rain.

Would you guys driving on the street with a spool please enlighten me. I also would like to know how is it on the highway?

I'm interested in this too. What about a spool on the highway? Anyone?

in my opinion its not bad at all. ive had a spool in my everyday driver for the last year and a half. i drive it rain or shine, and even went through a whole winter with the spool in there. no problems. actually doesnt even wear the radials out much faster at all like i thought it would. will take half the rubber off a set of slicks in one long evening of cruising though

oh, and about your highway driving question, its just like driving with a normal differential. i really like it, makes the car more predictable, and i like the solid feel. on real hard tires it will chirp some on REAL tight turns (tight as in turning into parking space tight, not turning from one road to another). on softer radials its not a whole lot different, just have to turn the wheel harder. takes high speed corners just fine too

im sure other people will say you shouldnt do it, that it behaves horribly, that im an idiot etc.... but thats my opinion on driving with one in my only car for over a year

The only thing you have to watch is the axles, you have to make sure that your not getting any twisting, it gets worse with sticky tires, you didn't say if it was the stock rear or 12 bolt, and what spline axles you have.

I drove on a 8.5" 10 bolt with 4.10s and a spool in my 69 camaro...didnt have any problems. I never drove it in the rain so I cant give ya an answer for that one but dry weather it was fine. Im more of a locker fan for a DAILY drive but weekend warrior is fine with a spool I think.

a spool is a solid peice of metal that takes the place of the differential. It locks the axles together, so no matter what both tires turn at the same speed. This is mainly used for drag racing or dirt track sprint cars, because neither type of racing requires the wheels to be able to turn at differnt speeds. On a street car the tires will wear out faster, although someone mentioned it wasnt all that bad, and in the rain can be VERY dangerous.

The only reason I wouldnt want a spool on the street, is because I have been places far from my home, and it started raining. not taking the highway home wasnt an option (talking from VA to MI) ANd I had to get home, so I would have been on the highway in the rain with a spool, even long sweeping turns would worry me in that situation.

Normally, when you go around a turn the outside wheel needs to rotate more than the inside, since the inside distance is shorter. Thats why all cars have a differential. One way to strengthen the rear axle is to remove the differential.

A spool is a completely locked rear axle setup. No differentation at all. Both wheels turn at the same speed all the time. Its lighter, takes less hp to spin, safer at the track, but harder on tires on the street. Since there is no differentation, it can be a little trickier on sharp turns.

edit - looks like someone beat me to it

J.

Just an update,

I have a 2002 Z28 M6 with a Moser 12 bolt with 33 axles 4.56 gears with a Strange spool.

The reason that the spool in there is:
#1. I have already broken this rearend after only 2 two weekends of bracket racing. The set up then was same as above with the exception of a Eaton posi:
#2. I bought this car to Drag race and drive on the street. With all the racing that I will be doing with it, I do not want to worry about the rear end breaking on me.

Keep them coming boys!

OK OK any 7.5 10 bolt people have a spool in there car!!! i was reading summit and jegs and there were a few makers of mini spool's for a 7.5, 7 5/8.

i am sick of breaking this BIG POS i have tried everything there is to offer for a 7.5 except a spool...

3 broken diff's
auburn, torsen, eaton
2 broken axels
stock, moser
plenty of bearings and gears too

i probably should say f*ck this 10 bolt and buy a 9'' already!

I just got my moser 12 bolt with 31 spline axles. If I break this **** I will definetly be going towards a spool. How expensive are these things?

spools are cheap compared to a locker/posi. thats half the reason i used it in the first place. i paid $70 shipped for my used spool .

as for using a mini spool in a 7.5/7.625" 10 bolt, first you would have to buy an open differntial. you would also have to use c-clip eliminators, and im not even sure that is easily possible with the small axle tube diameter. and you will still have a weak *** rearend

I just installed my Strange with a Spool & 4:10's. It drives just fine on the road. Like it was said some churps on turns.

As a side note:
I have a Wolf Race Craft rear sway bar and the setup is very streetable.
