Question Why the spacer?

I plan on going from 2.73s to 3.73s so I checked out speedinc and found that a spacer is needed. I dont know anything about the rear ends so can someone shed some light.

Here's a good place to start reading.

You need a spacer because you have a 2 series carrier.

If you keep the 2-series carrier, you can go with thick gears. That would eliminate the need for a spacer. I found a really nice used 3-series carrier on ebay, and purchased it when I did the swap. That allowed me to use regular 3.73 gears, and I was able to get rid of my tired old 2-series carrier.
