Default gears

I have a 2000 Z28 (A4) and I was wondering what gears should I put in it I love freeway pulls, I would like to still be able to hit 145 or so and be able to get a ton better acceleration than my 2.73's

3.73s or if you dont want to go that big you can always get 3.23s, and how fast do you drive on the highway lol. do you regularly hit 145??? if so how many tickets have you got lol.

3.73s if you want to be a ***** about it
I'm going to be running 4.10s on my DD though. However, the HW I drive on has a 55mph speedlimit so it won't be to bad. Do you have a stall converter yet? If not, that will help out with your acceleration quite abit.

Gears are a big issue. And mostly because of the 4l60e it's only a 3 speed auto with overdrive. WOT shifting from 3-4th is apparantly bad, as are WOT kickdowns from 4th to 2nd or 1st. This means you have to use 3rd as your primary gear unless you are just crusing.

So the red line/rpm limter in 3rd will be your top speed.

If the tranny was a porper 4 speed then no questions 4.10's would be the way.

But assuming stock tyre diameter and stock rpm limiter 4.10's will only take you to around 110mph before your out of gear. Even with a cammed setup and a limiter of 6500rpm you'll still only see ~120mph.

So for this reason I would never go with 4.10's.

3.73's are a little better:

6000rpm = 123mph
6500rpm = 133mph

Personally I like 2.73's, 80mph is only 2000rpm in top. And from a roll they work great, they don't have the dead spot like the 3.23's have. But yes "in-gear" accelaration will be less with them.

3.23's are IMO about the worse gear for an auto. It has dead spots all over the show and right where you are likely to roll race from. From a dig they will out perform a 2.73 car but I quite firmly believe that from a roll or just shear driving enjoyment that the 2.73 is the better.

This really leaves only 3.42's looking at the stats these will still have a bit of a dead spot at aroud 35-40mph. This is because you are too high in the revs to kickdown to 1st so it will only kick down to 2nd which will be 2500-2900rpm, so well out of the optimum power band. But IMO they are much better than 3.23's which have several dead spots. The 3.42's should only have that one area, so you'd just need to remember to not race from that speed, either make it sub 35mph start or nearer 50mph.

Top speed is also good with the 3.42's:

6000rpm = 134mph
6500rpm = 145mph

I do agree a stall would be a good choice (personally I'd look at a mininum of ~3500rpm).

But it depends largly on your setup. A wild n/a cam setup will require a mininum of 3.42's just to keep the cam in the power band.

But I will be honest I do love the ability to pull out on a section of road and hammer it until the speed limiter kicks in at 158mph. And the 2.73's are the only gears capable of doing this.

If I was to go FI (turbo) then I'd seriously look at running 3.08 gears, these are only available on 12 bolts not 10 bolts though.
