broke a tooth off pinion gear
So, now what are my options??
It has/had 3.73 Richmonds.
In the interest of better gas mileage, (its pretty well the only way I won't have to sell the car) I want to get taller gears. It came with 2.73s so thats a 2 series carrier right??
What do I need for an installation kit?? I will be having a shop do it.
I don't drag race the car so while I would love to get a 12 bolt I just cannot afford it right now.

Yes, you have a 2 series carrier. You obviously have an A4. You will need a thick gear of the appropriate ratio. Ratech makes an installation kit; there are several to choose from. I would get one that has the following:
pinion shims, carrier shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, and pinion & carrier bearings.

OK, thanks koolaid_kid. I think in reality I have two options right now:
1. Buy a new set of gears and pay to have them installed.
2. I have found a complete 10 bolt for sale. It has 2.73s and has 48K on it.
The complete 10 bolt would probably be the easiest since I should be able to install it in my garage right??
Opinions??

It is up to you, since funding appears to be a problem.
Personally, I would avoid a used differential. If I were to buy one, I would buy a series 3 carrier with either 3.23s (from an auto) or 3.42s (from a manual).
When I went from a 2.73 to a 3.42, I dropped 1-2 mpg in town and on the highway. Just an FYI, you should see the reverse if you go back to the 2.73.

I'd go for the used 10-bolt. You'll spend a lot less money that way. And yes, if you have any mechanical inclination, you should be able to put it in yourself. Everything should be quite apparent when you look under the car.
