Fluid Dripping from Rear End
Hey y'all,
Just like the title says, I have found fluid dripping from the read end and "gunk" is building up around the mount for the torque arm from the leak which appears to be originating from the rear end. What are your impressions as to what is wrong? Should I be expecting something major to be wrong such as having to replace the rear or is it something minor possibly? Let me know your thoughts please!
Thanks,
Jason

Yup i'd have to agree, cuz if there were no build up on the torque arm part then i'd would only be the rear cover seal.
I got the new car with the pinion seal leaking, still gotta change it. Might as well go w/ 4.10's while im in there

How much is something like that to have replaced? And would it be worth that money to replace it or should I save up for a 12 or 9 bolt to install when I get the heads/cam and built tranny with 4000 stall?
Thanks,
Jason

Go on line to GM recalls. Almost every Z/28 & Trans AM made between 1998 & 2002 have this Factory Defect. The seals were made in China out of cow guts or something similar. General Motors saved about $2.50 on each of our beloved cars not caring the least about their customers anguish. Some horror stories I've heard say they've gone to the expense of replacing these ****** seals 3 & 4 times only to have them start leaking again in about 2 or 3 months. No known cure except to baby your vehicle & drive like you were 80 years old.

Pinion seal for sure...
There wasn't a recall for that. GM would fix it under warranty, but that's about it.
If you are definately going to go with a 12 bolt or 9 inch, I wouldn't worry about it.
It's easy to check the fluid, the fill plug is on the drivers side, and takes a 3/8" extension or ratchet.
Check it periodically and top it off.

I assume I need the car jacked up to check the fluid level? I do have an aftermarket warranty and I thought it had seals and such covered so I may check that as well. But overall, general consensus is just check the fluid level if I have to foot the bill and just let it leak till upgrading to the 9inch or 12 bolt and keep it filled till then but if the warranty covers it have it replaced?
Thanks,

i agree alot of f-bodies have this problem, every one i've seen does. all the ones i have seen have been wet around that area, but never actually dripped down to the ground.
now i'm pretty sure you just have to remove the drive shaft and remove the 32mm nut off the flange, remove the flange and change the seal, there is no need to remove the gears to change this seal.

Yea I am positive it is dripping because there are corresponding drip marks all over the garage floor directly under the Rear end and torque arm. Is this something that will be detrimental?
Thanks,

Well I ended up gettin all the seals changed and my warranty covered it all. No more dripping fluid and there is no more clunk coming from the rear which I'm assuming was due to the low fluid level back there. Thanks for all the help everyone!
