Default Piecing together a rear?

I recently heard somewhere it would be alot cheaper if i bought the housing and axles for a 9inch or 12 bolt and then bought all the other pieces required and put it together myself but my question is what else is involved in putting it together. I know i need gears, diff, install kit but what other small things am i forgetting?

You will need the center section, which includes the gears and traction unit. Bob

Carrier bearing's
Spigot bearing
Spigot bearing retainer
Differential (Detroit Locker, Torsen/Gleeson, TracLock, spool... etc)

Pinion seal

Pinion yoke
Pinion shim kit
LockTite and sealer

12bolt
Housing, axle's, brakes and related hardware
Pinion bearing's
Carrier bearing's
Differential (EATON, Detroit locker, Truetrac, spool, etc)
Gear set of choice
Ring gear bolts
Crush sleeve (solid spacer, which I recommend)
Pinion seal
Pinion nut and washer
Pinion yoke
Pinion and carrier shim kit
LockTite and sealer

Install... that is a little difficult to explain in one sitting. But it will require some specific tools and shop equipment. I dont recommend that you do one for the first time without some help from someone that is familiar with the assembly process... or you could be spending your money twice when you screw it up. Most shop's labor for a bench assembly is around 175-200 complete.

I will tell you that the 9" will be much eaiser to do with less tools and equipment. Once you get the pinion support loaded with the necessary components and set pre load correctly... the rest is gravy. Very simple and very easy to make adjustments... compared to that of a 12bolt... with a much lesser chance of messing something up where it would require parts replacement. I know I have seen some assembly web pages that were actually quite good... I am on the road right now and dont have my desktop favorites with me. Ill try and post them later.

Well... sure it can.

If may take you a little longer to "create" your pile-o-parts... but you can save money by doing your homework, a little research and possibly waiting for things to go on or that you find them on sale... or even when dealers offer discounts. A few phone calls can save yu some bucks.

Afterall, all you need from them is parts... not labor.
