Default Now what?

back story - rear end would clunk pretty hard when turning the car sharply

finally got some time off and a chance to pull the cover off to see what was up. i can't see anything broken, but when i spin the wheels and watch the smaller gears inside what i assume to be the posi unit or whatever, they don't turn. i'm a complete noob, so maybe they're not supposed to, i don't know. i haven't put everything back together yet, what else do i need to check for possible damage, malfunction?

please go easy on me, lol, i'm trying to learn here.

edit: just realized i posted this in the wrong section, can i get a mod to move it please

What year posi? If its an older clutch type posi the side gears wont turn till the clutches break free as if you were cornering. Newer posis 98? and up are torson posi and you cant really see the side gears.
