Default How to test for bad differential?

Co-worker has a '99 Formula with an A4, he had the car inspected and asked the mechanic to check out the car because of an intermittent slipping problem (when on hills or from dead stop). Mechanic "thinks" the differential is bad, I told him to get a second opinion due to the cost involved. I always thought a bad differential would make noticeable noise, I've only had 2 go out on me (in different vehicles) and both of them made horrible noises. Any way to check and be 100% sure before he spends his cash?

You should be able to pull the cover and take a look at the gears inside the differential. Everytime I've had one fail there were spider gears chipped/broken off.
