Default Need help reading gear pattern, Chicane?

Details
  • Strange 12 Bolt
  • 4.88 Richmond Gears (used), at least that's the box they came in.
  • 15in lbs preload on pinion, used bearings
  • .008 backlash on ring gear
  • carrier fits REAL snug (light tap of hammer) but will probably need to preload some more, i'm guessing .004 will do in current config.

On the drive side the mark seems to be centered between the face and flank and the heel and toe, althought not as parallel as I was expecting.

On the coast side, only seems to be hitting the heel side, but with a much wider pattern than the drive.

Brushed marking compound perpindicular to the teeth to help make reading them easier.

99% strip car, occasional cruise across town for shows/meets etc

How much pinion shim? I would recomend a .030 to start and maybe some pics of the used gear without any marking compound on it. If it is used you don't know how bad it was beat up before you got it.

You are putting the yellow compound on way to thick. Little dab will do ya. Pattern looks funky too.

I started with .030 and it wasn't even close. It's sitting right around .08 or .09, can't remember. That's what it took just to get the pattern centered. It seemed REALLY odd, but I can't say I do this for a living so I figured I would post.

The wear on the gears didn't look out of the ordinary compared to what was already in the diff. when I bought it new.

I've done 5 gear swaps and they've been straight forward for the most part.

I'm out of town until Thur. Thanks for the help Scott.
