Question 2011 Camaro SS exhaust

My 2011 Camaro SS has what looks like a heat riser in front of each muffler. Why are these there and can they be removed without any problems?

Don't know what it would hurt to remove them.

Default 2011 exhaust

Here is what I am talking about. No dealer can tell me anything about them.

They are a noise dampener for the SS convertibles to keep down the drone when the AFM kicks in.

yeah if you remove those, the mufflers, or do most anything to a L99... you better be ready to tune it to remove AFM, because it gets to be annoying as hell....

that is with the coupes, I couldn't imagine the convertibles, lol

I still say AFM is a joke... I took it off my SS and GAINED on mpg average, lol... and this is after adding headers/exhaust and I know my foot is now heavier... I really think its just a marketing scam or something, because even on the highway... gas mileage pretty much the same...

GM should have just bit the bullet and threw the LS3 in the damn auto cars... people say "it was to avoid the gas guzzler tax"... yeah, it was, and an investigation into that by me led me to find out that tax would have been $750.... guess what, I would have GLADLY paid that, lol... Hell, I can save that in parts from NOT having to do a LS3 top swap when I get ready for a real cam, lol
