my first thought is to check lifters, valve springs, pushrods, rocker arm bolts, check clearances.
take the serpentine belt and blower belt off and see what happens also to localize noise to engine or spinning accessories.

sounds like a good idea...does the whole unplugging plug wires 1 at a time thing work?

speaking of compression, I would be checking static also in case of cracked piston.

the exhaust thing would be nice lol. cant say the same for the cracked piston.It also breaks up under WOT at 5500-6000 but is fine if i ease into it.not sure if both problems are related.Guess ill try to look for an exhaust leak tomorrow and try to change plugs and wires with a tighter gap. hoping for exhaust leak and just blowing the spark out.
