Default Car won't start help please!!!!

My 2000 Trans Am 6speed won't start today. The key goes into the ignition fine and I can turn it back to power the accessories, but it will not move foward past the off position at all. Another thing I noticed is that the steering is not locked like it normally does, I can turn the steering wheel.

I tried starting in gear and in neutral, Moving the tilt, and turning the steering wheel a little. I also rolled the car foward a little and there was no change.

What could be causing this? Ignition problem? VATS?

TIA

Hey man, I'm currently going through a similar problem.

What you gotta try and do first of all is follow "lovin myls1" and his simple tests. Once you test out all the possible problem areas, you can easily narrow it down.

One of the main things you ned to grab for now is to find a Multi-Meter. I'll try to get lovin myls1 in here to try and help you too :p. He needs to write up a sticky already!

I looked through some his recent posts and didn't see anything that really fits my description well.
It almost feels like the ignition column is stuck. It can go back, but can't go foward past the off position.

the key is fine, but it looks like the lock cylinder will need to be replaced

Electrical tests wont help if key won't turn- sounds like key culinder BUT the fact that the steering wheel won't lock is worrysome.Looking in the Service Manual I found the part where the key goes in and they call it "Steering Column Lock Cylinder Set" so I would recommend at the very least pulling it out and inspecting it-a new one may fix your problem.Good Luck

i know you said you moved the tilt up and down but did you do this while actually trying to turn the key? Fixed a similar problem on my buddies Evo-Try to turn the key an slowly move the tilt up an down. If that doesnt work then id say something is messed up with the lock cylinder.
