Default Fuel Gauge level wayyyyyyyyyy off

When i got the car, the needle on the gauge was way off. At full tank it would be all the way to the right, near empty i guessed around 1/2 maybe higher.

I will be dropping the tank and checking the little float thingy. Does anyone have a pic of what angle it should have when empty?

mine will be way to the rights for a while when full then drops to about half, and when its about to go empty itll go under 1/4th tank. i thought something needed to be replaced but we repalced the sending unit and it was the same thing, its just our cars.

It's your sending unit has gone bad. How would the float have gotten bent? It's nearly impossible unless you have been messing with it before. My turdgen does the same thing and it was the sending unit.

our cars gauges are so damn off, and screwy anyway. probably not even a bad sending unit, hell more than likely waste time switching them like i did and itll be the same. our sending units/guages just suck...just something youll have to get used to is all.

There are a couple checks you can do before dropping the tank. This is for a '95 but probably the same: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#fuel_gauge

I need to check mine, it seems to be reading much too high. The odd thing is that the fuel gauge still moves back and forth as fuel moves around in the tank, when braking for example. But unless I am suddenly getting 40 MPG I think I might have a problem.

What do you do if you do have a bad sending unit? I read that it is part of the pump and not available separately, and after checking GM Parts direct that does appear to be the case.

yes, it is part of the pump. technically i guess you could replace just the sending unit but once you pull it all out and see for yourself, just change the pump, dicking around with changing the sending unit alone is just more hassle.
